How to Reduce the Risk of Frozen Pipes

During the winter season, there’s a high risk of pipes freezing due to temperatures that drop. Frozen water pipes can cause extensive damage to a building and be costly to repair. If you want to reduce the risk of frozen pipes during the winter months and have peace of mind, there are a few effective tips to follow as a homeowner.

Install Proper Insulation

A lack of proper insulation is one of the main causes of pipes that freeze. Consider spending a few hundred dollars to open up specific walls to replace or install new insulation. Rerouting the pipe is also an option as a last resort for a northern wall in a cold climate. The preventative measure will be an investment in time and money but can reduce the risk of damage that can occur during the winter season.

Turn Off the Main Water Supply

If you plan to travel during the winter months, you’ll want to turn off the main water supply before draining the system. Open all of the faucets and flush the toilets to remove any moisture from the pipes to prevent them from freezing and bursting. It’s also necessary to set the thermostat to at least 55 degrees to prevent the interior setting from becoming too cold. Blow out the water supply lines to remove residual water with the use of an air compressor.

Add Anti-Freeze

Anti-freeze is one of the most effective and affordable products that can be used to prevent your pipes from freezing. The product can be applied once the water supply lines are blown out and the toilet bowls are empty. Look for a non-toxic product that is a pink RV type, which is available at big box stores or auto supply departments. Our technicians are qualified to provide you with tailored solutions to meet your specific needs when it comes to preventing your water pipes from freezing.
