Signs Your Water Heater Needs Replacing
Does it take a long time for your water heater to produce hot water? Or is your water heater making loud knocking sounds? If so, these may be signs that your water heater needs to be replaced and to call in a plumbing expert. It might be time to call a local plumber who specializes in water heaters to see if you need a new unit.
1. Not Enough Hot Water
This is the most common sign that a water heater is breaking down. Over time, mineral deposits can settle at the bottom of the water heater tank and block heat from the burner so there’s less hot water. It takes longer to heat water and, in many cases, the water heater will start to leak.
2. Noises Coming from Water Heater
You might hear knocking, banging, or popping sounds coming from your water heater. Since mineral deposits can build up inside the water heater, water has to boil under these sediments and this causes noises. Eventually, this can also cause your water heater to leak.
3. Water Smells or is Cloudy
When minerals build up inside the water heater, the deposits can escape and make your water cloudy or have a metallic smell. They can also clog up screens in your faucets.
4. Rust or Water Dripping
You might see rust or water dripping from connections to your water heater. While water heaters have a rod to stop corrosion, it can eventually wear out and cause connections to your water tank to fail.
5. Water Leaking from Tank
If your water heater is leaking
, this is the clearest sign that your water heater is having problems and must be replaced right away.
If you see any of these signs, don’t delay calling a plumber. A bad water heater can cause a large water leak in your home and if the temperature and pressure relief valve fail, the water heater might explode and even destroy a home and seriously injure the residents.
