Summer is here and so is the hot weather. As youโre probably aware, your garage is one of the hottest places in your home, so letโs talk about how to cool it down so you can use it for more than parking your car or storing all your extra stuff (for those men out there hereโs how to get your man cave back)!
#1 Start with the garage door.
Painting your door white can decrease the amount of heat absorbed. Studies show that white garage doors absorb about 20-30% of the sunโs heat, while dark color garage doors absorb about 70-80%. You also want to make sure that your garage door is sealed with a rubber gasket this will prevent heat from seeping through.
#2 Upgrade your insulation.
Insulation is a major factor on keeping any space cool. Garages are typically poorly insulated, which is why they are almost always unbearably hot! If the walls in your garage are not covered in drywall, it can be fairly easy to insulate them yourself. However, we would recommend contacting a Campbell & CO electrician for a project review, insulating your walls could involve some tricky electrical work. You can also buy kits to insulate your garage door.
#3 Install a ceiling fan.
Before we get too crazy, make sure your garage has enough clearance for a ceiling fan. This is an effective way to keep your cost low while helping keep your garage cool. Ensure the blades are between seven and nine feet above the floor and 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling. Fans with diameters measuring 36 to 44 inches are sufficient for most garages. However, if your garage is larger than 225 square feet, opt for one 52 inches or larger advises the U.S. Department of Energy.
#4 Install a ductless mini-split system or wall AC unit.
Itโs called a โmini-splitโ because itโs like a mini central air conditioner, which is split into an inside and outside unit. Not only are they extremely effective in cooling a one specific area, theyโre also small, quiet and unobtrusive.
